Keir Starmer aims to ‘steady the ship’ in UK foreign policy.

The UK’s new Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, faces high expectations in both domestic and foreign policy following his recent victory in the election. However, don’t expect drastic changes in Britain’s foreign policy just yet. Starmer’s Labour Party’s foreign policy promises are similar to the ousted Conservatives, with little criticism of past stances.

One reason for this continuity is the challenging economic situation Starmer inherits. He aims to revitalize the nation before prioritizing any major shifts in foreign policy. Starmer’s alignment with the US-led world order also suggests a steady course in global affairs as he seeks to strengthen ties with Europe post-Brexit.

The UK’s presence in the Indo-Pacific may continue, but concerns about overextension loom. Balancing relations with China amidst US pressure will be critical, as Starmer plans an “audit” of Chinese ties. In the Middle East, expect alignment with Washington on key issues, like support for Israel and cooperation on Iran.

While Starmer focuses on domestic challenges, his commitment to traditional alliances with the US will shape Britain’s foreign policy, especially considering the outcomes of the upcoming US Presidential elections.
