Italian Chamber of Deputies rejects plan to recognize Palestine

Italy’s Chamber of Deputies recently rejected a proposal to recognize Palestine as a state, put forward by left-wing opposition parties. The motion, brought by the Five Star Movement in May, was defeated by the right-wing majority in parliament.

Despite inspiration from Spain, Ireland, and Norway’s recent decisions to recognize Palestine, Italy’s ruling parties passed their own proposal supporting recognition within a negotiated framework of two states. The outcome sparked criticism from the M5S, who abstained from the vote, accusing the ruling parties of empty rhetoric in international affairs.

During discussions, Deputy Riccardo Riccardi condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and highlighted the ongoing conflict with Palestinians. Opposition member Peppe Provenzano stressed the right of Palestinians to their own state, while ruling party member Giangiacomo Calovini expressed concerns about unilateral recognition decisions by other European countries.

Furthermore, Paolo Formentini from the far-right League party argued that recognizing Palestine could reward Hamas, justifying their opposition to the motions. The debate showcased Italy’s political divide on the issue of Palestinian statehood.\
