India’s gains from Astana SCO summit

India’s recent focus on multipolarity, counter-terrorism, energy security, and regional security issues at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Astana is a strategic move to tackle global challenges and safeguard its interests amid shifting global and regional orders.

Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not attend the summit, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar represented India and engaged with key stakeholders. The discussions emphasized the need to address cross-border terrorism, particularly targeting Pakistan.

India also highlighted the importance of developing resilient supply chain mechanisms, combatting technological disruptions, and enhancing energy security in the Eurasian region. The country’s diplomatic efforts aimed to secure its interests while navigating regional security challenges.

Furthermore, India’s engagement with China on border issues and the SCO’s counter-terrorism initiatives underscored the country’s commitment to multilateral cooperation and addressing shared security concerns.

While concrete outcomes may not be immediate, India’s active participation in multilateral forums like the SCO signals its readiness to champion key issues and advocate for a rules-based international order.
