Germany’s police union (GdP) is urging Turkey fans to refrain from displaying the controversial gray wolf gesture during the upcoming Euro 2024 match against the Netherlands. This warning comes after Turkish player Merih Demiral received a two-game ban for making the gray wolf sign, associated with Turkey’s far-right, after a victory over Austria.
German Police’s Concerns
Chief Jochen Kopelke stated that politics should stay off the football field and warned against using extremist symbolism. The match poses high risks, with exceptional law enforcement challenges expected. The goal is a fair and peaceful match despite calls from Turkish ultras for fans to use the gesture.
Controversy Surrounding the ‘Wolf’ Gesture
UEFA banned Demiral from the Turkey-Netherlands match and a potential semi-final, citing a breach of conduct. Despite expressing pride in his Turkish identity, Demiral’s gesture was condemned by German politicians, sparking diplomatic tensions with Ankara. The gray wolf sign is linked to the extremist Gray Wolves group, responsible for attacks against various ethnic minority groups. While the group is banned in some countries, Germany has not taken that step yet.
