Bengaluru’s climate action faces old challenges as it gains momentum

BBMP has established a climate action cell to enhance inter-agency coordination, marking a crucial step towards aligning Bengaluru’s climate goals with planned actions and progress evaluation. Led by Shrimoyee Bhattacharya of WRI India, the cell leverages existing resources to analyze various agencies’ initiatives and their connection to the city’s climate targets.

BCAP, operating under a 2019 GHG emissions baseline, aligns with national and state climate action plans. With diverse funding sources, including national schemes, private partnerships, and government budgets, BCAP focuses on clean air and sustainable transportation initiatives. To secure additional funding, the city plans to introduce climate budgeting similar to Mumbai’s recent allocation for climate-themed projects.

BCAP envisions a sustainable future with blue-green policies for urban spaces, transportation, and disaster risk reduction. Although not legally binding, the blueprint sets a strategic path for the city, with a strong focus on nature-based solutions like wastewater reuse according to consultant Shubha Ramachandran.

By taking the lead in climate action, Bengaluru aims to fulfill its commitment to C40’s global standards, emphasizing the importance of local indicators and evidence-based policies for sustainable urban development.
