Following Labour’s victory in the UK general election, Taoiseach Simon Harris emphasized the need for a “great reset” in Ireland’s relationship with the UK. Harris expressed his intention to speak with incoming British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his “comprehensive victory.” He highlighted the significance of the relationship between the two countries and stressed the importance of strong leadership.

Harris praised the Labour Party manifesto for emphasizing partnership and recognizing both countries as co-guarantors of peace. He also mentioned the need to match Starmer’s commitment to the peace process. The Taoiseach hopes for a reset in British-Irish relations, acknowledging the turbulent past years due to Brexit.

Both Tánaiste Micheál Martin and Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald welcomed the election results as an opportunity to reset Irish-British relations and honor the Good Friday Agreement. They expressed optimism about the potential for improved collaboration and partnership between the nations.
