Russian dissident relocated to prison hospital

Russian dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza, known for criticizing President Vladimir Putin and the war in Ukraine, has been hospitalized while serving a 25-year sentence in Russia. His wife, Evgenia Kara-Murza, revealed that officials have refused to disclose his condition after his transfer to a prison hospital. Kara-Murza, who holds dual Russian-British citizenship, has previously accused Russian authorities of attempting to poison him in 2015 and 2017.

After being arrested in April 2022, Kara-Murza was sentenced in 2023 for spreading “false” information about the Russian army and alleged affiliation with an “undesirable organization”. He has been a vocal critic of Putin’s regime, advocating for human rights and sanctions against Russian officials for corruption.

Despite concerns for his well-being, especially following the death of opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Kara-Murza’s continued activism has drawn attention from international organizations. The US state department has condemned his treatment as part of a wider crackdown on dissent in Russia.
