A 21-year-old Ohio tourist was bitten by a shark while playing football in knee-deep water at New Smyrna Beach on the Fourth of July. The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
The same day, four people were injured in a shark attack at a Texas beach. The incident occurred at South Padre Island on the state’s southern coast. Police confirmed the attacks at Beach Access 14 near Wanna Wanna Beach Bar and Grill.
Florida, recently named the shark capital of the world, has had the most unprovoked shark attacks globally. Volusia County alone has seen 351 attacks since 1882, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History’s International Shark Attack File.
Despite these incidents, beachgoers continue to enjoy the shores, taking in the sun and surf. Remember to stay vigilant and be cautious of the ocean’s potential dangers when enjoying your beach day.
