When is a mission not a mission?
When 32 NATO countries are struggling to agree on a name for an effort to support Ukrainian forces fighting against Russia’s invasion. Leaders of the military alliance are set to endorse the initiative at an upcoming summit in Washington, but finding a name that satisfies all members has proven to be a challenge.
Last month, NATO ministers decided to take over the work of a US-led group coordinating military aid to Ukraine post-invasion. Initially referred to as “NATO Mission Ukraine,” objections were raised by Germany, fearing implications of troop deployment.
The name has since been changed to NSATU – NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine. However, dissatisfaction remains among other countries for the complex acronym.
With the summit approaching, diplomats are still searching for a suitable name that holds political significance. But as one senior NATO diplomat lamented, “All these abbreviations sound funny and don’t have political oomph in them.”
As the search for the perfect name continues, the pressure is on to find a title that resonates with all NATO members.
