Mozambique battles Cabo Delgado insurgency

Mozambique battles Cabo Delgado insurgency

In Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado province, local forces have been confronting insurgent threats since 2017. The Defense Minister, Cristóvão Chume, highlighted recent successes against these threats at the conclusion of the SAMIM mission, which involved troops from eight SADC countries, Rwanda, and Mozambique.

The mission led to significant insurgent casualties, dismantling rebel strongholds, and the return of displaced communities. Chume emphasized the importance of strengthening defense capabilities and implementing a reconstruction plan for Cabo Delgado, focusing on humanitarian aid, infrastructure rebuilding, and economic activities.

SAMIM’s Role in SADC

The solidarity within SADC, demonstrated through SAMIM, showcases regional unity in addressing security threats. Despite challenges like a recent assault on Macomia district, there has been progress in reducing terrorist bases and operational capacity. This conflict highlights resilience and regional cooperation in Southern Africa, aiming to restore normalcy and secure a future for citizens.
