Indian Prime Minister Modi to Discuss Release of Indians in Russian Army During Visit to Moscow
During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to Moscow, the early discharge of Indian nationals who were misled into serving in the Russian army will be a key topic of discussion. Several cases have emerged where Indians were promised lucrative jobs or education in Russia but ended up fighting in Ukraine. Indian police have already arrested individuals linked to human trafficking networks involved in this practice.
Despite requests for comment, Moscow has remained silent on the matter. With at least four Indian nationals killed in the conflict, Modi’s government is urging for the immediate cessation of recruitment and the prompt release of Indian soldiers.
India estimates that around 30 to 40 of its citizens could already be serving in the Russian army, with efforts underway to bring them back. While thousands have lost their lives in the Russia-Ukraine war, India has refrained from condemning Russia, instead advocating for dialogue and diplomacy to end the conflict.
Other South Asian nations, such as Sri Lanka and Nepal, have also taken measures to prevent their citizens from being lured into joining the Russian army. Modi’s visit to Russia on July 8 and 9 will include talks with President Vladimir Putin.
