Japan to bolster ties with UK under new gov’t

Following the Labour Party’s landslide victory in Britain’s general election, Japan is committed to strengthening its relationship with the new administration. Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi emphasized the importance of the partnership between Japan and Britain, highlighting shared values and principles.

Tokyo is willing to collaborate with London on global issues such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific to counter China. With Keir Starmer becoming the new British prime minister, succeeding Rishi Sunak after 14 years of Conservative Party rule, Japan and Britain have intensified their security ties in response to complex geopolitical challenges.

The two nations are also working with Italy on a joint project to develop a next-generation fighter jet by 2035. Japanese Defense Minister Minoru Kihara affirmed the significance of the trilateral fighter jet plan, underscoring the continued cooperation in defense technology.

As Japan and Britain navigate the evolving global landscape, their collaboration remains crucial in addressing security threats and advancing shared interests.
