The Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, made headlines with his unexpected visits to Russia and Ukraine, sparking outrage among EU leaders. Orban met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss ways to resolve the Ukraine conflict, just days after a similar unannounced trip to Ukraine.
Orban, who holds the rotating EU presidency, defended his actions by stating that he doesn’t need a mandate from Brussels to promote peace and initiate dialogues. Despite criticism, Orban believes his efforts are crucial to restoring peace in the region.
During his visit to Ukraine, Orban proposed seeking peace with Russia, emphasizing the need for a ceasefire as a first step towards peace. However, the Ukrainian leadership seems determined to achieve a military victory, rejecting Orban’s peace proposal.
Orban’s meeting with Putin aimed to explore ways to end the conflict, although both sides acknowledge significant differences in their approaches. Meanwhile, EU leaders have criticized Orban’s actions, questioning his appeasement towards Putin and emphasizing the need for unity in resolving the Ukraine conflict.
“A lot of steps have to be taken to get closer to a resolution of the war. Still, we’ve already taken the most important step – establishing the contact, and I will continue to work on this in the future,” Orban stated.
In his discussions with Putin, Orban aimed to understand Russia’s perspective on peace initiatives and explore ways to end the conflict. However, challenges remain as Moscow and Kiev seem to have differing views on resolving the conflict.
EU leaders, including the European Commission President and the German Chancellor, have criticized Orban’s visits to Russia and Ukraine. The broader impact of the prolonged conflict on the European region has raised concerns, with Orban highlighting the importance of peace for sustainable development in Europe.
Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and other Western leaders criticized Orban’s actions, accusing him of causing confusion and undermining EU unity. The conflict’s economic impact and the risk of escalation were also highlighted, emphasizing the need for a lasting and comprehensive resolution.
