The European Union is standing firm on its plan to combat deforestation, despite calls for a delay from certain industries and countries. Starting from Dec. 30, companies in the EU will need to prove that their supply chains for products like soy, beef, coffee, palm oil, do not contribute to deforestation. The US government and industry groups have raised concerns about the readiness of the EU’s systems for implementing the ban, but there is no indication of a delay.
European Environment Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius acknowledged the challenges but emphasized the importance of aligning with the EU Deforestation Regulation. While some EU lawmakers and countries support a delay, Denmark’s Environment Minister has urged the European Commission to proceed with the pioneering environmental policy while ensuring the technical systems are in place.
The policy has caused a split within the EU, with differing opinions on its implementation. Despite the challenges, the EU remains committed to its deforestation law to protect forests and ensure sustainable practices in the supply chain.
