Central Equatoria State recently announced the cancellation of its groundnuts seed-bulking project due to concerns over climate change. The State Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, and Forestry had initially planned to launch the pilot project to provide groundnuts seeds to farmers in Lokiliri and Liriya. However, Minister Gerald Francis explained that the project was scrapped because it was too late in the season for the crop to thrive.
Instead, the funds allocated for the project will now be redirected towards training farmers, mechanics, and tractor operators. Francis emphasized the importance of being proactive in preparing for future seasons, stating that the focus now is on building capacity for the next planting cycle.
Climate change poses a significant challenge to agricultural projects, and Central Equatoria State’s decision to adapt to the changing conditions reflects a proactive approach to sustainability.
