Nearly 500 people in Japan have been hospitalized after consuming health supplements containing red yeast rice, causing concern due to potential toxic substances present in the supplements. The supplements, linked to several deaths, are under investigation for possible health risks related to beni koji, a type of red mould used in food coloring.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co, the manufacturer of the supplements, recalled products produced in 2023 due to the presence of puberulic acid, a potentially toxic substance. The company has faced criticism for delayed action in addressing the health impacts of its products, prompting government scrutiny and public warnings to discontinue use.

International cases of health issues related to these supplements have also been reported, leading to investigations in Taiwan and warnings from Chinese consumer associations. The ongoing situation highlights the importance of transparent and timely communication regarding product safety.

The Independent has reached out to Kobayashi Pharmaceutical Co for further comments on the matter.
