The U.S. Defense Department has announced a massive $10 billion plan to upgrade tactical military aircraft stationed in Japan. The plan includes replacing outdated aircraft with cutting-edge models to enhance defense capabilities in the region.
At Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, the Air Force will transition from 48 F-15C/D jets to 36 advanced F-15EX aircraft, maintaining a mix of 4th and 5th generation jets during the process. In Misawa Air Base, Aomori, 36 F-16 jets will be replaced with 48 F-35A jets.
Additionally, the Marine Corps will boost the number of F-35B stealth fighter jets at the Iwakuni base in Yamaguchi prefecture. The Defense Department highlighted the close coordination with the Japanese government and emphasized the plan’s significance in reinforcing the defense of Japan and promoting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
