The Senate Passes Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2024: A Step Towards Ensuring Fair Elections

The Senate recently passed the Elections (Amendment) Bill, 2024, with a majority vote, marking an important step towards ensuring fair and transparent elections in Pakistan. The bill seeks to restore the original provision allowing the appointment of retired high court judges as members of election tribunals.

The controversy over who should appoint tribunals to decide election disputes, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) or the Lahore High Court (LHC), has been brought to the forefront. The Supreme Court is currently hearing an appeal by the ECP regarding this issue.

The law minister, Azam Nazeer Tarar, emphasized the importance of the bill, stating that it aims to expedite the resolution of election-related petitions within six months. The government’s decision to reinstate the original provision of the Election Act, 2017, regarding the appointment of retired judges in election tribunals has garnered support from various political parties.

With the passage of this bill, Pakistan moves closer to ensuring a more efficient and transparent electoral process, paving the way for a more democratic society.
