Putin announces new missile – RT Russia & FSU

The Russian defense industry is gearing up to produce intermediate and shorter-range missiles previously banned under the now-defunct INF Treaty with the US, as announced by President Vladimir Putin. The Cold War-era treaty prohibited these systems, but the US pulled out in 2019, prompting Moscow to consider resuming production if necessary. Putin emphasized the need to counter US actions, including deploying missile systems in Europe and the Philippines for exercises.

This decision comes after the 1987 INF Treaty, which aimed to reduce tensions by banning ground-based ballistic and cruise missiles with ranges of 500 to 5,500 km. While Russia continued to abide by the treaty, the US accused Moscow of violations and eventually withdrew. Now, Russia is prepared to develop and deploy these missile systems based on the current geopolitical landscape.

Despite concerns over escalating arms races, Moscow’s move reflects a strategic response to perceived threats. The decision to resume production marks a significant shift in Russia’s defense strategy, emphasizing its commitment to maintaining a robust national defense.
