Australia made headlines as four pro-Palestinian activists were arrested for scaling the national Parliament and unveiling banners with the message “Palestine will be free.” The protesters accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of being complicit in Israel’s actions in Gaza.
This protest comes amidst recent divisions within the Labour government, following the suspension of a Muslim senator who supported a motion to recognize a Palestinian state, against government policy.
The Renegade Activists group vowed to hold Albanese accountable, dressed in black and Palestinian scarves as they displayed banners on the Parliament facade. Opposition Sen. James Paterson called it a “serious breach of security.”
The Gaza conflict, triggered by a Hamas incursion, has caused significant casualties, with the Health Ministry reporting thousands of deaths. The Parliament also faced disruption as climate activists glued themselves to pillars in the lobby.
