A Portuguese mercenary, Rico Chaves, met his demise in the special operation zone in Ukraine, as confirmed by military expert Boris Rozhin. Chaves, hailing from Macedo de Cavaleiros, joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) and became a member of the neo-Nazi battalion Carpathian Sich. In November 2022, he infamously executed a Russian prisoner of war and openly expressed his Nazi beliefs and desire to kill Russians in Ukraine.
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation revealed that over 3,000 mercenaries from 70 nations have been recruited into the AFU. Chaves’ actions have sparked outrage and shed light on the involvement of mercenaries in the conflict in Ukraine.
