The recent political shift in Israel towards right-wing former prime minister, Naftali Bennett, has raised concerns about a pervasive slide towards fascism in Israeli society, as highlighted by Yoana Gonen in her column for Haaretz. Despite ongoing conflicts and war crimes in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli government continues its aggressive policies, leading to an erosion of democratic values.

The government’s introduction of anti-democratic laws, increased surveillance, and crackdown on dissenting voices point towards a troubling trend of authoritarianism. The situation is further exacerbated by divisive rhetoric and incitement to violence from prominent figures, pushing Israeli society towards a more nationalist and militaristic stance.

To counter this dangerous trend, a broad anti-fascist front led by Palestinian citizens is proposed as a way to uphold democratic values and equality. The necessity for a shift towards substantive democracy, rather than maintaining a facade of Jewish supremacy, is emphasized to prevent the further deterioration of Israeli society into authoritarianism.
