A recent study by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) reveals that most Europeans are doubtful about a NATO-Russia war, favoring negotiations to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. The study, titled The Meaning of Sovereignty: Ukrainian and European Views of Russia’s War on Ukraine, surveyed individuals in 15 European countries.
Findings indicate that a significant number of Europeans believe the war in Ukraine will conclude through diplomatic means, with sentiments particularly strong in Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, and Spain. Surprisingly, only Estonia showed a high percentage of respondents who believed in a Ukrainian victory.
The study also highlights that while some countries like Poland and Estonia support increased defense spending in response to the conflict, others like Italy, Greece, and Spain are opposed to such measures. Furthermore, there is widespread opposition to deploying troops on the ground in Ukraine, with the majority of Europeans preferring to provide technical assistance to the Ukrainian military.
