The Brazilian Solicitor General has taken legal action to end the strike of public servants from environmental agencies Ibama and ICMBio. The government argues that their work is essential and cannot be halted.

The strike, which has expanded to 25 states, is impacting environmental inspection and licensing work. Post-fire cleanup operations are not being carried out, and fines are not being issued, potentially leading to increased destruction in the Pantanal and Amazon regions.

Union demands for a wage increase have not been met, leading to a full stoppage after failed negotiations. The government offered a wage hike, but workers argue it only covers past inflation, and negotiations have resumed since the government’s declaration to stop negotiations in June.

Environmental workers are pushing for a significant pay increase to address deforestation challenges, as fires continue to ravage Brazil’s forests.
