The US Department of Defense has announced a $2.2 billion military aid package for Kyiv, which includes missiles for Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems. This funding is part of the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative and will provide interceptors to defend Ukraine from Russian aerial attacks. It marks the 16th tranche of equipment from US military inventories since August 2021.
Additionally, the aid package includes missiles for HAWK air defense systems, ammunition for HIMARS, artillery rounds, anti-armor systems, small arms ammunition, and more. The Biden administration’s presidential drawdown authority will fund the immediate shipment of these items.
NATO has pledged to provide Ukraine with €40 billion in weapons annually, with a focus on aiding the country in its conflict with Russia. However, the US has refrained from making promises beyond the upcoming elections. Washington emphasizes the need for future administrations to consider spending commitments, highlighting the importance of equitable burden sharing among NATO members.
The UN reaffirms its support for Ukraine, stressing the illegality of invading another country. While Russia’s UN envoy dismissed Trump’s claims of ending the war in Ukraine swiftly, emphasizing the complexity of the crisis.
