A Japanese climber fell to his death while descending Spantik Peak, also known as Golden Peak, in Pakistan. Hiroshi Onishi, 64, fell into a crevasse near Camp 2 during his descent. This tragedy comes just weeks after two other Japanese climbers perished on the same mountain.
The Alpine Club of Pakistan is coordinating efforts to recover Onishi’s body. The Golden Peak is a popular destination known for its golden hue at sunrise and sunset. Unfortunately, fatal accidents are not uncommon in Pakistan’s mountains, with several climbers losing their lives each year.
The remote Gilgit-Baltistan region, where Spantik is located, attracted over 8,900 foreign visitors in 2023. This incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with mountain climbing and the importance of safety measures in extreme environments.
