Israel’s Attorney General Demands Closure of Detention Camp
Israel’s attorney general has demanded Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to close the Sde Teiman desert detention camp “immediately,” following reports of widespread abuses against Gazan detainees. The request contradicts the position of National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who called for harsher conditions at the facility.
The detention camp was initially meant for temporary detention before transferring detainees to prisons, but overcrowding has led to extended stays. Human rights organizations petitioned the Supreme Court to close the facility after reports of torture and abuse surfaced.
International condemnation has mounted against Israel for its offensive on Gaza, leading to calls for an immediate cease-fire. The International Court of Justice has ordered a halt to military operations in Rafah, where thousands sought refuge.
