Is DA’s absence from Gauteng executive a threat to Ramaphosa’s GNU?

The failure of ANC and DA leadership in Gauteng to form a government of national unity similar to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet has sparked intense debate. Despite weeks of negotiations, the two parties were unable to find common ground, leading to the exclusion of the DA from the provincial executive announced by Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

Gauteng DA leader Solly Msimanga cited the ANC’s “bad faith” negotiations as the reason for their refusal to participate in the unity government. The absence of the DA has raised concerns about the effectiveness and credibility of the government of national unity.

Lesufi emphasized the importance of collaboration and compromise in his announcement, highlighting the need for political parties to work together for the benefit of the electorate. However, the refusal of the DA to participate reflects a larger issue of partnership and cooperation in the province.
