GIZ launches initiative to tackle gender-based violence in South Sudan

Empowering communities to combat gender-based violence, the “Respect: Stop SGBV – Respond, Prevent, Educate!” project was launched in Juba, funded by the EU and BMZ. With 65% of women and girls in South Sudan experiencing GBV, the initiative aims to address this critical issue with a budget of 7.99 million Euros over three years.

Main components include counseling services for family conflicts and engaging men to redefine gender norms. This project underscores the urgency for collective action, as highlighted by Regina Ossa Lullo from the Ministry of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare.

The event was attended by high-level officials and representatives, emphasizing the widespread support to combat SGBV in South Sudan. Scheduled to run from January 2024 to October 2026, the Respect project focuses on empowering communities and building capacities to effectively combat gender-based violence.
