A recent ruling by the Bayelsa High Court has sentenced four kidnappers to 40 years each for the abduction of a former Commissioner for Trade and Investment in the state, Federal Otokito. The incident occurred on January 20, 2022, with the perpetrators demanding a ransom for his release.
The presiding judge, S.W. Amaduobogha, found Kingsley Obhesi (24), Joshua Abi (32), Gift Damene (38), and Powell Inegite (36) guilty of conspiracy, kidnapping, and unlawful possession of firearms. The police prosecuting counsel, Stella Jerry-Friday, highlighted the details of the crime, emphasizing the violent nature of the kidnapping.
Jerry-Friday commended the investigative and prosecution team for their thorough work in proving the charges against the convicts. The ruling reflects a strong stance against kidnapping and related crimes in the region, sending a clear message to potential offenders.
