Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed concerns about the influence of foreigners on human rights institutions in Ethiopia. He called for an investigation into the role of these organizations, hinting at the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC).
Abiy’s comments came just before the EHRC’s press conference to release its annual report. The commission, led by Daniel Bekele, has been critical of government forces for rights abuses in conflict zones like Tigray and Amhara.
The EHRC, funded partly by the government and external partners, has a mandate to promote and protect human rights in Ethiopia. Abiy’s remarks raise questions about the independence and integrity of the commission.
