Deputy Prime Minister outlines accusations against military personnel.

Recent revelations in the Dáil have shed light on a concerning trend within the Defence Forces, with 68 personnel facing charges or convictions, including cases of sexual assault, physical assault, and domestic violence. Tánaiste Micheál Martin emphasized the importance of addressing these issues within the organization, particularly for those still on local leave.

When questioned by Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns, Mr. Martin defended the Government’s actions regarding gender-based violence, citing the publication of a “zero tolerance strategy” with a significant budget allocation. However, Cairns expressed frustration with the lack of tangible results, pointing to instances where individuals with criminal histories were still allowed to operate in sensitive roles.

Despite the challenges highlighted, Mr. Martin reiterated the Government’s commitment to addressing these complex issues, acknowledging the multi-faceted nature of the underlying problems. The need for concrete action and accountability remains a pressing concern, as echoed by Cairns and other critics.
