Council: Hong Kong dentists’ qualification requirements fair

The Dental Council of Hong Kong recently clarified that the clinical experience requirements for dental students were developed in consultation with the faculty and took into account various factors to ensure achievability. This statement came after concerns raised by Professor Thomas Flemmig, the retired dean of the University of Hong Kong’s dentistry faculty, regarding the quantative requirements imposed in 2019.

The council emphasized that the accreditation requirements considered both quality and quantity, contrary to Flemmig’s remarks. The contentious changes in 2019 included treating a certain number of patients and performing specific dental procedures before qualifying to work in the city. However, Flemmig doubted if these criteria accurately reflected students’ competence.

The council addressed concerns related to clinical training, including pandemic disruptions, and expressed willingness to work with the faculty to rectify any non-compliances. It also emphasized ongoing communication since 2012 regarding accreditation exercises and the need for remedial action in case of deficiencies.
