Protesting youths attacked and burnt the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Sankara, the headquarters of Ukum Local Government Area in Benue State. The National Commissioner, Sam Olumekun, confirmed the attack, stating that the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Benue State, Prof. Sam Egwu, reported the incident during a protest against bandit activities in the area.
The attack resulted in the destruction of several government facilities, including the INEC office. The damage was extensive, with no reported casualties. Furniture, 10 electric generators, 300 ballot boxes, and 270 voting cubicles were among the items destroyed.
Security agencies have been informed and deployed personnel to restore order and investigate the incident. This marks another assault on an INEC office, with 50 similar attacks recorded across 15 states in the last four years. Imo State leads the list with 11 incidents.
