Russian and Chinese companies are reportedly collaborating to develop drones similar to the Iranian Shahed kamikaze drones, according to unnamed European officials. Talks between the companies began in 2023, with prototypes tested this year. The drones have not yet been deployed in Ukraine.
Speculation suggests China may supply assembled units or unassembled kits to Russia. Although Chinese companies have been providing vehicles and components to Russia, they have maintained a neutral stance in public. Supplying kamikaze drones would signify a departure from China’s current policies.
The drones, possibly Sunflower 200 models, bear similarities to the Iranian Shahed drones and were showcased at the Armiya-2023 military forum in Russia. Moscow has been using Iranian drones in Ukraine since 2022, prompting a need for alternative sources following Ukrainian strikes on Russian drone facilities.
Despite accusations of supporting Russia, China denies sending lethal aid. The EU has sanctioned Chinese companies for their alleged support. The US believes China is considering sending aid, but the situation remains unclear.
