9News reports that the university has increased security and stationed guards at campus entrances as students return to class. Support services are being offered to students and staff affected by the incident.

The state counter-terrorism command team is investigating a 14-year-old boy from the Inner West. The boy, who has mental health issues, was arrested at a hospital for hand injuries. No charges have been laid yet.

The counter-terrorism command alleges that the boy was armed with a knife, but no motive or ideology has been determined at this time. However, there do not appear to be any religious ties.

Although the boy is not known to the 22-year-old victim, he is known to police and government agencies. Readers seeking support can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or beyond blue on 1300 22 4636.
