German Chancellor Supports Macron to Prevent Rise of Right-Wing Populism in France
The German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, has expressed his concern about preventing a “populist government” from gaining power in France. He has been in daily contact with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss the rise of the right-wing National Rally party.
After Jordan Bardella’s National Rally trounced Macron’s Ensemble bloc in the parliamentary elections, Scholz reiterated his support for Macron at a summer festival in Berlin. He emphasized the need to prevent France from being led by a right-wing populist party.
The National Rally, previously led by Marine Le Pen, won 33% of the vote in the first round, prompting concerns about a potential far-right government. Macron called for early parliamentary elections after the RN’s success in the European Parliament, but the outcome of the upcoming second round remains uncertain.
As various candidates withdraw from the race to consolidate the anti-RN vote, the political landscape in France is undergoing significant shifts. Bardella has criticized these alliances and stressed the RN’s commitment to forming a government only with an outright majority.
