Russia Hit by Record-Breaking Summer Heatwave

Russia and Crimea experienced record-breaking temperatures on Tuesday amid a scorching summer heatwave, setting off around 40 daily temperature records, according to the Phobos weather center. The blistering heatwave has engulfed Russia from central regions to the Far East, with temperatures hitting a high of 38.7 degrees Celsius in one Siberian village.

Meteorologists have dubbed this July as “the hottest in the entire era of global warming,” surpassing the heatwave experienced in 2010. Moscow recorded its highest temperature in 134 years at 32 C, while the southern Krasnodar region and Far East city of Vladivostok also witnessed record highs.

The extreme heat extended to Crimea where cities like Simferopol and Yalta recorded scorching temperatures. Additionally, the dry weather fuelled wildfires in the Far East Zabaykalsky region. The heatwave is expected to persist through the week with Moscow reaching 31.1 C on Wednesday morning.
