Russia claims downed 5 Ukrainian jets in air base strike.

Russia claimed to have destroyed or damaged five Ukrainian military jets in a strike on an air base as Kyiv prepares for the arrival of F-16 fighters. The Russian defense ministry stated they fired Iskander-M missiles near Myrgorod, Ukraine, destroying five SU-27 fighters and damaging two. While the footage of the strike and its aftermath was published by the ministry, it could not be immediately verified. Ukrainian air force declined to comment on Russia’s claims but showcased successful combat missions on social media. Ukrainian sources confirmed equipment losses at the air base.

Kyiv awaits the arrival of Western F-16 fighters to improve defense against Russian attacks. Multiple NATO countries have pledged to supply the jets, with the first deliveries expected soon. Despite the promise of new fighter jets, questions arise about Kyiv’s ability to protect them from Russian fire. Hungary’s prime minister proposed a quick ceasefire in Ukraine to facilitate peace talks with Russia. The United States announced new security aid for Ukraine, while Orban’s visit to Ukraine signifies European priorities for a just peace in the region.
