Pakistani-Canadian Businessman Tahawwur Rana’s Extradition Case
A US attorney recently argued before a federal court that Pakistani-origin Canadian businessman Tahawwur Rana, sought in India for his role in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is extraditable under the US-India extradition treaty. The assistant US attorney, Criminal Appeals Chief Bram Alden, presented his closing argument at the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, where Rana has challenged a District Court order denying his writ of habeas corpus.
Rana, currently in a Los Angeles jail, faces charges related to the Mumbai attacks and his association with Pakistani American terrorist David Coleman Headley. Alden emphasized the overwhelming evidence supporting probable cause for Rana’s extradition, citing his meetings with Headley and involvement in planning the attacks.
Alden argued that India has every right to prosecute Rana under the extradition treaty, despite claims by Rana’s attorney, John D Cline, about a double jeopardy provision. The 2008 Mumbai terror attacks resulted in 166 deaths, including six Americans, and India seeks to hold Rana accountable for his alleged role in the heinous acts.
