After a disastrous debate performance, calls for President Joe Biden to step down have been mounting. Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas is among those demanding his resignation, sparking speculation about potential successors with Jewish connections.
Vice President Kamala Harris, with her Jewish husband Doug Emhoff, has a strong tie to the Jewish community. Known as “Momala” by Emhoff’s kids, she has been a vocal advocate against antisemitism and has taken on official duties related to the Jewish community.
Other potential candidates include Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who has navigated pro-Palestinian protests in her state, and California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has been attentive to the Jewish caucus in his state and has opposed divestment from Israel on campuses.
Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg are also being considered as potential successors with Jewish backgrounds and strong ties to the community.
