Kenyan Police Crack Down on Suspected Criminals Masquerading as Protesters
Over 270 individuals have been arrested by Kenyan police for posing as protesters and engaging in criminal activities during antigovernment demonstrations. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) disclosed that 204 suspects were apprehended in Nairobi, with an additional 68 captured in other regions.
The Interior Cabinet Secretary condemned the protests as a “reign of terror” and warned against further violence. Following clashes resulting in protester casualties, the unrest was sparked by a contentious finance bill imposing new taxes and exacerbating financial burdens. Despite the bill being abandoned, protesters advocate for President William Ruto’s resignation under the “RutoMustGo” campaign.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reported casualties and injuries resulting from rally violence, criticizing the government’s response as excessive. Activists attribute the recent violence to government-instigated infiltrators and have scheduled further demonstrations. Amid escalating tensions, the populace demands accountability and meaningful dialogue to address their grievances.
