Opposition’s Walkout During PM Modi’s Reply Sets Dangerous Precedent: Rajya Sabha Chairman
Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar criticized the Opposition for walking out during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s reply in the discussion on the motion of thanks to President’s address, calling it a “dangerous precedent antithetical to democratic values.” He also condemned Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge for entering the well of the House, stating it was a “disgrace to parliamentary conduct and propriety.”
Dhankhar urged members to set an example of conduct for the House to become a “temple for deliberations, discussion, dialogue, and debate.” He expressed disappointment over the disruptions that marred the proceedings and emphasized the importance of responsible behavior for the institution’s prestige.
The 264th session of the Rajya Sabha witnessed President Droupadi Murmu’s address, Modi introducing his new council of ministers, and lively participation in the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address. Despite some disruptions causing forced adjournments, the House exceeded productivity by extending sessions beyond schedule.
Overall, the session highlighted the need for respectful and constructive parliamentary practices to uphold democratic values and facilitate meaningful discussions.
