At least 121 people, most of them women and children, were killed in a crowd crush at a religious event in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. The stampede occurred at a satsang in Hathras, about 200km southeast of New Delhi.
A preliminary investigation found that more people than expected showed up at the event, causing chaos as hundreds tried to collect the soil the religious preacher had walked on. Authorities confirmed 72 identified deceased and were investigating the incident further.
This tragic event highlights the dangers of overcrowding and the importance of proper crowd management. It serves as a reminder to prioritize safety protocols in large gatherings to prevent such devastating incidents in the future.
