The Maldives, a stunning island nation, has taken a significant step in strengthening its diplomatic ties with Türkiye by appointing its first-ever ambassador. President Mohamed Muizzu chose Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef as the nation’s top diplomat to Türkiye. Latheef, a former lieutenant general who previously served as chief of the Maldives Defense Force, brings a wealth of experience to this important role. The decision to open a diplomatic mission in Ankara was made after President Muizzu’s official visit to Türkiye in December.
Last November, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan warmly welcomed President Muizzu and his delegation in Ankara. The two countries have a longstanding diplomatic relationship dating back to 1979. In addition to the ambassador to Türkiye, President Muizzu also appointed ambassadors to Bangladesh and Pakistan, further solidifying the Maldives’ international presence. This move showcases the Maldives’ commitment to fostering strong relations with key countries in the region.
