The Acholi community in South Sudan has expressed concerns about the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) encroaching on their territory and establishing a military barracks near Poge in Magwi County, Eastern Equatoria State. The UPDF has been reported to patrol South Sudanese territory, harass farmers, and threaten the community along the borders.
Ojok Francis, Coordinator for the Pajok Community, raised these issues with the Eastern Equatoria State leadership, highlighting the presence of UPDF barracks within Acholi community centers in Poge. The community is urging the state government to deploy forces to protect farmers and ensure their safety in the area.
Benjamin Pole-Pole Olum, Commissioner of Magwi County, confirmed the encroachment of UPDF forces into South Sudanese territory, causing fear and panic among the Acholi communities. Governor Louis Lobong Lojore of Eastern Equatoria State emphasized that international border issues fall under the national government’s jurisdiction and assured the community that steps are being taken to address the situation.
While attempts to reach SSPDF Spokesperson Maj General Lual Ruai Koang for a comment were unsuccessful, the concerns raised by the Acholi community underscore the need for swift and effective action to protect the sovereignty and safety of South Sudanese citizens.
