A distillery in India has been accused of employing child labourers and subjecting them to unsafe working conditions, leading to chemical burns.
Police are investigating the use of child labour at a Som Distilleries and Breweries Ltd factory in Madhya Pradesh state after discovering 59 underage workers.
Children as young as 13 were reportedly filling and packing liquor bottles, working long hours in hazardous conditions without proper training.
The company’s license was suspended following the investigation, but they have obtained a stay order from the state high court.
This incident sheds light on the prevalence of child labour in India’s alcohol industry, a problem that has also been reported in other international brands operating in the country.
