Brussels clears Lufthansa takeover of Italy’s ITA – DW

The European Commission has approved Lufthansa’s plans to acquire joint control of Italy’s ITA Airways for €325 million. The Commission’s conditional approval, subject to compliance with remedies, addresses concerns about competition in the central European region with limited alternatives. Lufthansa and the Italian government have agreed to facilitate short-haul flights by rival airlines and share landing slots at Milan airport to prevent domination. Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr welcomed the decision, emphasizing the benefits for passengers and air traffic in Europe.

Italy’s Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti hailed the approval as a success for Italy, Germany, and Europe. ITA Airways, established in 2020 after Alitalia’s restructuring, will see Lufthansa acquire a minority stake initially, with potential for future control. The deal reflects a strategic partnership amidst the evolving aviation industry. The approval signals a positive move for both airlines and passengers alike, promoting competition and enhancing connectivity.
