Recent cases of U.S. military personnel accused of committing sexual crimes in Okinawa have caught the attention of U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin. Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder confirmed that Austin is closely monitoring the situation and working with Japanese communities to address their concerns.
Ryder emphasized that the alleged behavior does not align with the core values of the U.S. military and assured that the majority of Japan-based personnel exhibit proper conduct. While Ryder did not disclose whether Austin had reached out to the Japanese government, he expressed deep concern over the severity of the allegations and emphasized the importance of the U.S. and Japan alliance.
U.S. military units are actively collaborating with local authorities in thoroughly investigating the allegations within the bounds of applicable laws and agreements. This follows the recent arrest of a U.S. Marine for attempted rape resulting in injury, adding to the gravity of the situation after an Air Force man was indicted for kidnapping and sexually assaulting a minor.
The Pentagon remains committed to addressing the issue and upholding the values of the U.S. military despite these disturbing incidents.
