The Irish Government has recently announced a new quota of 150 employment permits for sea fishers to address skills shortages in the country’s fishing fleet. This means that the role of sea fisher is now eligible for a General Employment Permit with a minimum salary requirement of €34,000.
In 2015, an Atypical Working Scheme (AWS) was established for fishers from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) to combat exploitation and trafficking issues in the fishing industry. Now, following a recommendation from a cross-governmental group, the sea fisher role has been moved from the AWS to the Employment Permit System.
Minister of State for Business, Employment and Retail, Emer Higgins, stated that opening this quota will help fill the labor shortages in the sector and provide non-EEA sea fishers with the same benefits and protections as other non-EEA nationals working in Ireland.
Overall, this change is expected to streamline the employment permit process and make it easier for employers to recruit non-EEA sea fishers, ultimately benefiting both the workers and the fishing industry as a whole.
